"I
learned that power could be and should be demystified,
that it can come from very real people like me."
Charity Ngilu, Presidential Candidate, Kenya
Columbian rebels have kidnapped Ingrid Betancourt, a senator
and presidential candidate in Columbia. She's been forced
to move her children out of the country to protect them while
she fights to reclaim her country.
In
an exclusive interview for "Madam
President!" Betancourt
told producer Robyn Symon that she felt she was given "less
protection on the campaign trail" than her opposition because
she was a woman and she was outspoken against government corruption.
Yet fighting for her principals was "more important than
death." (See full
story).
When
TV journalist, Toujan Faisel of Amman, Jordan announced
she was running for political office, she received death threats.
She ran and won, becoming the first woman to The House of Deputies
in Jordan. Rare news footage will tell the story of women breaking
with tradition and entering the political corridors for the
first time. They were women in countries where traditionally
women did not consider politics as a path, but who because of
extraordinary circumstances, had no choice. Their success is
an inspiration to all women in showing what is possible.
Yet
in spite of these atrocities, women like Mireya Moscoso,
the first female President of Panama, Finland's first female
president, Tarja Halonen, and Connecticut's Ella
Grasso, the first woman elected governor in her own right,
are ushering in a new era, breaking down barriers and changing
the face of global politics.
These
women are among a growing number of women who are sacrificingtheir
safety, their families and their reputations to run for elected
office."Madam President!"
will transform the traditional limited perception ofwomen's
choices into one in which politics is a career option.
